Valentino is one of the most iconic and influential women’s fashion designers of the last fifty years. This year the world was honored with the release of the first documentary delving behind the scenes into the life of a legend, and “the man behind the throne”. Valentino: The Last Emporer will make you laugh, make you cry, and make you want to get a pug.

Director Matt Tyrnauer, Giancarlo Giammetti, and Valentino at the premiere.

The director, Matt Tyrnauer, was gracious enough to come to the Academy and discuss the blood and sweat that went into making his first film. Tyrnauer has been a journalist with Vanity Fair for 17 years, and first became intrigued by Valentino when he was dispatched to Rome to do a story on him in 2004. The Last Emperor has been a project almost two and a half years in the making, with over 270 hours of footage that was shot. First premiering at the Venice Film Festival, it is an independent film, and as Tyranuer puts it, “an observational film…into the greatest partnership in fashion history.”

"The 5 M's" always travel in style.

And, no I’m not talking about the dogs, although they are as much a part of Valentino’s life, and the film, as is fashion. I’m referring to Giancarlo Giammetti, Valentino’s business partner and companion for over 45 years. Truly a patient and loyal man, Giancarlo is the bread to Valentino’s glamorous apple butter. And as much as Valentino hates to admit, he is not the sole star of the film, as Giancarlo emerges as the rock behind the empire. As Oprah stated, this film is “a love story,” a passionate and emotional look into what it takes to make a relationship last the test of time.

Valentino: The Last Emperor is now showing in over 30 cities around the globe, and soon to be released on DVD with loads of hilarious extra footage. The ultimate diva himself, a genius of “couture royalty,” Valentino finally takes center stage, just where he belongs.

Tan in a Can?

sublime

Well, not in a can exactly, although they do exist as well. L’Oreal Sublime Bronze is actually a tinted self-tanning lotion (also available in gelee form) that comes in a squeezable tube, and comes in three shades to match skin tones: Light, Medium, and Deep.

I prefer the Deep shade since I have an olive skin tone and a base tan. If you are an avid tanner, like me, and want the darkest and most immediate bronze shade as possible, this the best shade for you. Although I have not tried the lighter shades, I’m sure they work just as well to give a natural looking shade enhancement.

The active ingredient that is responsible for the instant bronze tint is AHA, or sublime-eva1alpha hydroxy acid. This is the similar tanning agent found in most spray tans and bronzing lotions. Once applied, you will see a noticeable bronze tint, complete with golden flecks of sparkle that add to the illuminosity of the skin (very pretty!) Within an hour, your golden tan will have developed. With repeated use, you may never need to step into the sun again. (Although I like to layer this product over a UV-based tan or spray tan to really enhance the effect!! I’m talking “Dancing-with-the-Stars-dark” Oh yeah!)

Although it is marketed as a quick-dry formula, both the gelee and the lotion take about 10-15 minutes to dry if applied generously. And the newest version claims to be transfer-proof and water-resistant, but will rub off slightly if not dry ALL THE WAY before putting clothes on. Use sparingly around knees, elbows and ankles and wash hands after application. Also containing Viatmin E, the product is super hydrating much like a daily moisturizer, so no need to use both.

So besides having to stand nude in front of the fan for quite some time, I have found this product to be the best on the market to help achieve the darkest, streak-free, golden brown tan. Hey, for these results, that a sacrifice I’m willing to make.

The spray-on tan. Possibly the most unique and wonderful invention ever to grace the tanning industry! A spray tan is completely UV-free, making it the safest and fastest way to get a  beautiful, bronzed tan.  Usually available in a variety of luscious golden shades, most spray tans last about 5-7 days. There are many different manufacturers of spray tan equipment and products. My personal favorite is the Magic Tan, a private booth that sprays a fine mist, and leaving you bronzed and beautiful in all under sixty seconds. Other application processes include the spray tan applied with a spray gun, which requires you to stand in the nude (or in bathing suit or underwear if tan lines are preferred) while a tanning consultant applies your tan all over your body. This process is not as speedy, taking about 10 minutes to apply, and ten minutes to dry (as you stand bare ass in front of a gigantic fan – not so fun!)
